They&#8217;ve have been&nbsp; much easier to photograph!&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Today, the order&nbsp; Odonata includes dragonflies and damselflies and goes back about 250 million years.    They&#8217;re predators, considered beneficial by us because they eat mosquitos, flies and other irritating pests (not telemarketers, unfortunately).   And they&#8217;ve hardly changed in all that time:  the dragonflies that&nbsp; buzzed around the dinosaurs looked pretty much like those of today.&nbsp;       Like sharks, they&#8217;re perfectly evolved for what they need to do and evolution considers them a finished work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Dragonflies and damselflies have some obvious differences:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em><strong>dragonflies<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">larger<br>wings held horizontal at rest<br>very large eyes<br>back wings wider at base<br>thicker body<\/p>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em><strong>damselflies<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">smaller<br>wings held against body at rest<br>long, thin, tubular body<\/p>\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Here&#8217;s a dragonfly &#8211; a whitetail &#8216;skimmer&#8217; &#8211; with all those distinguishing characteristics on display:<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large is-resized\"><a href=\"https:\/\/jimhphoto.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/DSC00496.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/jimhphoto.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/DSC00496-1024x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-3636\" width=\"512\" height=\"512\" srcset=\"https:\/\/jimhphoto.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/DSC00496-1024x1024.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/jimhphoto.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/DSC00496-300x300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/jimhphoto.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/DSC00496-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/jimhphoto.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/DSC00496-768x768.jpg 768w, https:\/\/jimhphoto.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/DSC00496-100x100.jpg 100w, https:\/\/jimhphoto.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/DSC00496-45x45.jpg 45w, https:\/\/jimhphoto.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/DSC00496.jpg 1200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 512px) 100vw, 512px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<div style=\"height:35px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And here&#8217;s a damselfly (note the wings held against the body). I find these in trees down by the creek. He&#8217;s just emerged from the juvenile aquatic stage, and needs to dry his new wings in the sun for a while. Each has some degree of specialization in its preferred habitat and prey, so you&#8217;ll find them on different plants, and at different times.  You will always feel you&#8217;re in the presence of an alert and purposeful hunter.
